New York Eleven Plus, Inc. (NY11+) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, comprised of prestigious New York State educational institutions offering four-year or more programs in Interior Design.
NY11+ is dedicated to promoting public awareness of the interior design profession by providing a platform to showcase student work from prestigious New York State institutions. By increasing visibility, it aims to emphasize the complexity and responsibility of the profession, particularly as it pertains to the health, safety, welfare and economics of the public.
NY11+ seeks to advance the purpose of interior design by demonstrating solutions to cultural problems, such as the diminution of natural resources, an aging population, ecological issues, and other social concerns.
NY11+ was founded by Ruth Lynford in 1997 as an exhibition of work from six New York metropolitan area interior design institutions. Under the auspices of the International Council for Caring Communities (ICCC), a non-governmental agency of the United Nations, students exhibited their work and met with delegates from all over the world, who took back to their native countries the students’ many innovative ideas in interior design.
By 2000, the exhibition consisted of work from eleven prestigious New York State educational institutions, all offering four-year programs or more in interior design, and in 2011, NY11+ became a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. To date, more than a dozen schools join together each year in New York City in an effort to reach the general public, the press and the design community through their students’ work.
